To elucidate major contributions and advances to the management of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) over the past four decades, this study examined the first 50 years of publication of the top 50 most cited publications on SCI. The study used a Web of Science search and all papers published in the Annals of Surgery between 1966 and 2000 in the three leading categories (Trauma, Vascular, and Neurosurgery) and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Of the 1,307 papers, 36 were included in the study. Although care for patients with traumatic SCI improved during the past 50 years, the most significant advances occurred in the first 40 years. No major breakthroughs have occurred since 1990. Topics demonstrating trends over time include rehabilitation (1966, 1982, 1987, and 2001), health-care economics (1966, 1972, 1977, 1988, and 1996), severe (grades A to D) traumatic SCI (1966, 1987, 1993, and 2001), tetraplegia (1966, 1978, 1987, and 1988), and clinical trials (1966, 1966, 1997, and 1999). Concurrent with advances in the management of patients with SCI, patient selection was associated with significantly improved outcomes. Although the World Health Organization's World Report on Disability estimated that 1,258,000 people live with a SCI in Europe, 13,000,000 people live with a SCI worldwide. Worryingly, as of 2001, there were an estimated 26,310,000 people living with a SCI worldwide, and almost half a million of these were children. As part of a complete multimodal rehabilitation strategy, the multidisciplinary SCI team provides intensive comprehensive care, collaboration, and communication. This research has identified important contributors to successful SCI care and obstacles to progress in the management of patients with SCI. We identified advances to the treatment of patients with SCI over the past 50 years, including the notable progress in the development of the innovative Spinal Cord Injury Database, rapid management changes, and improved patient selection and outcomes. Future research should focus on areas of great uncertainty, including the risk of infection as a complication of device The 19th-century history of the periodic table is described in great detail in this book. It is the most comprehensive book, apart from Webster’s, available on the chemistry, not only of the elements and compounds, but of compounds and their compounds, of isomorphs, heterocyclic compounds, inorganic compounds, inorganic and organic salts, isomeric substances, etc. It treats also of absorption, crystallization, combinations, less familiar atomic compounds, and gives much information on the properties of compounds, to which little attention has been paid, even in technical books. The book is intended mainly for chemists; it will also prove of interest to many students of inorganic chemistry. The author is a chemical research chemist of world-wide repute, and will be glad to hear of the interest shown in the book by those in his particular department of work. It is an attempt to show what has already been done in the chemical study of compounds and their properties, and to point out the more important future lines of work.
